About Me

This is my Media Blog. I will be using this to show you my progress on designing my own music magazine. I will be uploading my research, videos, photos and personal information on the stages of my magazine and to explain what I am doing at the moment. Here is the Link to my readers profile just to show who exactly I am aiming my magazine at - http://joannenmbec08.blogspot.com/2011/02/reader-profile.html

Summery of question 11 and 12 on my questionnaire.

One of my very close freinds David is what sub-cultures call today a "metal head", I know him very well and knew that he reads both magazines I picked to use for my research. Metalhammer and Terrorizer.

David gave me a more indepth answer then everyone else for two of the question in my quistionnaire and I have decided to pull this out and make it seperate as I will probably use David as a template for the 'Perfect reader' for my reader profile.

Question 11
Have you ever brought/read Metalhammer or Terrorizer? If so, what is it you liked about them?
“Metalhammer is the one that I start getting first because I had a decent range of the more well known mainstream bands and the actual journalism in it takes itself less seriously then others but Terrorizer is more underground and will go into areas of metal like satanic black metal stuff that hammer doesn’t really touch and tends to avoid a lot of the more mainstream bands that I cant stand”

Question 12
Is there anything you think a music magazine should have that most don't?
“I guess a wider range of reviews across the whole of metal rather than just what they know will sell issues because there are some really good bands that don’t get the recognition they deserve whilst bigger bands can put out crap records and still get loads of coverage because they’ve got a name.”

Evaluation of Questionnaire

In my questionnaire I asked 6 Boys and 6 Girls, ages between 16-22 years of age. All of them enjoy listening to metal along with other genres of music. Most people who brought magazine purchased them monthly and popular magazines I found are (along with Metalhammer, one of the magazines I am researching) NME and Kerrang were also very popular. People tend to only buy a magazine and read the interviews inside if they enjoy the music of the band being featured and some won’t even buy the magazine if they don’t like the band on the front cover. Most people don’t really visit magazine websites as they have the magazines itself but many say that if they enjoyed an interview featured they would be more likely to visit the magazine website and also the website of the band if it was included in the interview. The average price people would pay for a magazine is between £3.00 - £4.00. The two magazines I picked to research were Metalhammer and Terrorizer, which not many people had actually read or brought but a small percentage had, I am still going to stick with these magazines but I am also going to do a bit of research into NME and Kerrang as they were some of the most popular choice for metal and rock music. As for what people look for and like in music magazines and what they would like to see more of, this can be found out on the questionnaire link below.

Q magazine

Check out this SlideShare Presentation -
This slideshow presentation was assigned to us in pairs. We were given a magazine and a list of stuff we had to research from the price to the sales and where they were sold. Me and my partner Simab were given Q magazine. Me and Simab split up our sheets so that we both did certain parts for the powerpoint. I had 3 points to research.
1. Find 3 front covers of your magazine and analyse the conventions of the front cover and if possible a contents page and double spread. What I did was I went onto the Q website were they had a list and photos of every magazine they had ever released so not only did I compare 3 magazines from October-Decemeber 2010 but I also compared the first ever magazine they made which was in 1986 and then the latest one they did in January 2011. I also compared 2 contents pages and I didn't manage to compare 2 different double spreads but I managed to find one that I used just as an example to show what their doublespreads are like.
2. Who is the main audience? I researched and found another blog all on Q magazine that had a lot of information on it about the magazine that also had information for the website, this blog and the website both said that the main audience was 30-40 year old people, mainly men as the magazine is more concentrated on music then fashion or gossip which, they believe, won't appeal to women as much.
3. What is their circulation? I found this also from the blog, the blog and website said that the circulation was 103,017 in December 2008 and 81,240 of those were from the Uk or Republic of Ireland. These are the 3 points I researched.
The points that Simab researched were 'How do they attract and satisfy their audience?','Who owns and distributes the magazine?','How do you think they have used technology to develop their magazine?' and 'Do they have an online version?' all the answers and information for these questions are in the powerpoint below.

Preliminary task!

At the beginning of the Media course (September 2010) we did our Preliminary task. This was our first taste of creating our own school magazine, learning how to use Photoshop and learning about lighting and camera angle to get the photo we wanted.
Front Cover
This was my front cover. It has everything most magazines have... a masthead, a graphic which is a cut out and it's angle of gaze, the date, the price, pull quotes, plugs, teasers, puff-words.
Even with all these things that most magazines have this isn't an amazing piece of work. I was new to photoshop and to trying to take a good photo with good lighting and angle.
You can tell that the photo has been cut out because the edges of it are really flat and cornered and the colour of the background is very plan and bold. The graphic also doesn't take up most of the page and the writing and background colour seem to stand out more then the graphic itself.
All the text is very similar and plan and from first glance you wouldn't realise that it is a school magazine.
Thing that I could do to help improve is use photoshop more, get use to its tools and all the different techniques and also practise taking pictures with different lighting and angles.
I also think if I plan it out better and spend a bit more time on it I will deffinately be able to improve.

Contents page

My contents page is very plain and boring. The colours are very plain and bold. There aren't many photos on the contents page and you would never be able to tell that it is a school magazine. The font is very boring and the layout isn't well though out. I think I can improve my contents page when doing my music magazine but planning it out better, planning out the colours and photo, take more pictures for it and to mess around with different writings and fonts.
Maybe when  doing my contents instead of just plain colums of writing saying whats on each page I can highlights specials or important things in the magazine and maybe have another main image like on the frontcover and mix the colours up a bit but not too much, the contents page is pretty much identicle to the frontcover apart from the fact that the images and writing are different so when doing my new one I would like to mkix it up a little, give the frontcover and contents page there own unique twists but to still share the feel of the magazine all the way through from the frontcover to the double spread.
