Comparing my preliminary task to my Final.
Preliminary Task And Final Front Cover
These are my two front covers (My preliminary on the left and my final on the right). As you can see front first view there is a lot of difference and a lot that has been made better. I decided on the colour scheme for my new cover by going with colours that I thought matched the theme of my magazine which is Heavy Metal. I decided that black and red were very "metal" colours as it would be said and then decided that white works well with both of those colours and wouldn't cause as much confusion with a colour like blue or green. My background is plain black because I thought that it would give more of a look to the magazine with the red and black on top of it then the other way round e.g black and red on white, and it also made it easier for me to take a photo that could fit in well with the magazine as the white shows very well on the black and looks very natural where as I believe if it was a black t-shirt on top of a white background it would look too weird and would not fit the feel of a metal magazine. I decided the font for my masthead from the questionnaire I did involving asking the people in my media studies class as they could look at it from a "professional" point of view and also asking the people I asked to do my original questionnaire to get it from a "target audience" point of view which lead to me using the font I did. The font for the rest of the page was just a plain font that is all typed in capitals, this is because all the metal magazines I took the time to look at all were like that, they had plain text and was all capital so to fit convention I decided just to stick with that and the band name 'IYUS' is it the text of the actually band, this is there band logo. I have also inserted two buttons. One is the cymbal at the bottom which is a advertisement to actually win a pair of cymbals that are worth up to £400 and I thought seeing I was advertising cymbals it would be a good idea to make the button a cymbal for the effect, the other buttons is the 'WACKEN' one. Wacken is a very popular music festival that is set in Germany every year. On one of my other magazines that I looked at (Terrorizer) there was a button but instead of it being on like a proper 'button' the put it on two scythes which were crossing over so I decided seeing as it is talking about Wacked that I would put the Wacken logo up there. On this front cover compared to my Preliminary, I have posters, three of them, which are situated in the top right hand corner under the mast head and under them it states that they are free posters. I also have put in a selling line and the price and issue number. I have also put a bar code on but have made it look like a proper bar code where as on my preliminary the bar code is very squashed and looks messy. My text that is included on the front cover is a massive improvement I believe from me putting it into little text boxes to make it readable and visible to me using blending, shading and shadows to bring up my text and make it readable without the silly text boxes but still manage to put it over the photo leaving the photo just visible. I believe the from my preliminary task, my final is definitely a massive improvement in every way, not only do I believe it was better technologically done but I also think it looks more like an actual magazine where as my preliminary looks more like a leaflet or poster that has been rushed and poorly made.
Preliminary Task And Final Contents Page
These are my two contents pages. You can see the difference straight away between them. My preliminary is very basic and simple, there are not many pictures on it and the text is all thrown into the middle and looks very messy whereas on my final one the text is all set out in columns and is in different colours to indicate different things and also the text in the arrows are the same at the title on the page and are also the same font as the masthead on the front cover and I have put them in the arrows to point to the pictures which are the main features in the magazine that month. The title of the page matches the title on the contents and instead of just saying 'Contents' I have put 'Breaking it down...' as the magazine is called BREAKDOWN and it is like breaking the magazine up into parts for you so you can find the bits you want to find quick and easy. The colours are the same with the front cover, the yellow and red looks really weird together and just look really poster like and cheesy where the white and red upon the black gives it effect of the magazine and makes the magazine look "dark" which could also be used to describe metal music. I have more pictures on my new one and they relate properly to certain parts of my contents, there are indications to it and what the pictures actually mean where as on my preliminary there are just picture places around everywhere. I think have the page numbers in red and what is on the page in white gives the contents page a really good affect as it shows which bit you need to read to find out what is on the page or what page it actually is where if all the colours are the same you have to search to find which number relates to which section. I got this idea from Metalhammer who have different colours for their numbers and their definitions of what is on the page. I decided not to do an editors letter because I thought it may take up to much room and that everything that is inside the magazines is explained on the contents and goes in to more detail about it on the actually page and the editors letter is just explaining what we had done that month and what is in the magazine which I believe is already on the contents page and was not necessary for my magazine. My bottom right photo of my interview has been made black and white just to give it a change to the picture as the person in the photo (Freddie Palmer) and the type of photo is used quite a bit seeing it is on my Front Cover, my Contents and my double page spread, so the black and white is just to give it a twist and effect. The picture above is of a gig I went to on 25th February, I altered the blue lights in the picture to make them more prominent and to show off more and then I added the band name to make it look more like a band review photo.

Update!
A problem has accoured as the band I was going to us to photograph and interview have now become unavaliable and I am now in the process of talking to another band that I know and am waiting for some feedback on it all and hopefully get some picture of them playing live this Friday (25th Febuary) and then take ever more photos of them and interview them on Sunday (27th Febuary).

Masthead Research - Evaluation.
I have spent today researching into the font for my Masthead. After searching through loads of different fonts I finally narrowed it down to the 4 I thought would go best with the kind of magazine I am aiming to create. After realizing there was no way I was going to be able to decide myself and my friend and teacher debating about which they thought was the best, I decided I would make it into a question to which I asked people to pick which they thought would be the best font. I asked my media class (which consisted of 16 people including the teacher), I decided asking them would be a good idea seeing as they are all doing a music magazine the same as me and they have the same knowledge I do on Mastheads and what works well, so from a "professional" point of views I decided asking them would be a good idea.I then decided that I would ask all the people who did my questionnaire to choose so that I could get it from a target audience point of view.
These were the ending results:
Font 1 - 4/28
Font 2 - 2/28
Font 3 - 5/28
Font 4 - 17/28
Font 4 is by no doubt the most popular font of the four.
Even though font 4 is the most popular I still really like Font 3, so when it comes to putting them against my front cover I may use both and see which one looks better there and then and from there decide and carry on with the development like colour scheme.

This is part 2 of my Masthead research, I took my 4 fonts that I couldn't decide between and decided I was ask some people about it, first of I ask my media class which consisted of 15 students (not including myself) and Ms Burne (So, that is 16 altogether). I then added this onto my font research and came up with this.
The results of this are as followed:
Font 1 - 2/16
Font 2 - 1/16
Font 3 - 1/16
Font 4 - 12/16
Obviously Font 4 is the most popular font.
This is just the opinion of my media class, I though I would ask them as they are all doing the same task as me just different genres and some similar. My next step is too ask the 12 people who I got to do my questionnaire to see which they prefer and then add the details together in to one file and see from there which is the most popular one.
I hope to upload my questionnaire one within the next few days.

Analysis of Contents Pages
Just like for the front covers I have done an indepth analysis of the Contents pages. I have once again looked at the 4 magazines. Terrorizer and Metalhammer, my magazines of choice and then Kerrang and NME due to the results of my questionnaire.

Masthead Research
I decided on the name of my magazine to be "BREAKDOWN" as I am creating a metal magazine. (Breakdown relates to metal as in most metal songs there are parts where the music suddenly gets a lot heavrier, faster and has a deeper sound, this is called a breakdown.)
I decided to look at some fonts on the internet for ideas on what I could use for my masthead font and these are the 4 I have narrowed it down too.

Reader Profile
Thanks to my questionnaire I can not create a readers profile for the perfect person that my magazine will be aimed at.
William is an 18 years old. He lives at home with his mum, dad, brother Josh and 3 cats. William has always been a bright student and a massive metal fan. He likes bands such as Municiple Waste, Children of Bodom, Dimmu Borgir, Motorhead, Machine head, Slipknot and Oh! Sleeper, seeing he listens to these bands he spend a lot of time reading Metalhammer and Terrorizer and maybe on occasion depending what the issue is about he will read Kerrang, but that is very rare. He often gets shouted at by him mum and dad for having his music to loud or for the kind of language they can hear coming out of his speakers. His room is covered in clothes, food packets and magazines, his walls are covered top to bottom of posters of metal bands and the occasional guilty pleasure band that he wouldn't really tell people he likes. His CD collection is endless along with his collection of horror movies and comedies. His mum is always having a go at him to tidy up but his idea of tidy up is to push as much as he can under his bed then end up pulling it all out again to find something.William has just finished college and has got himself a part time job in a music shop. As he studied Music in college along with Media, English Language and English Literature, a music shop was his perfect environment. He got this job because he was saving up to go to a music festival called Wacken, that is held in Germany every year. Even though he has always been to Download and Reading, they weren't completely his scene and Wacken is a festival based all around heavy metal so him and his friends were planning on going. William will soon be starting University in Canterbury in Kent where he will study Music and English language as he would like to go into music journalism when he is older. His hobbies are going out with his friends to the pub, staying in and getting some friends over or practising with his band in which he plays the bass (along with guitar and piano). Him and his band play a lot of local gigs in metal clubs and pubs where they normally end up drinking quite a bit. Going to gigs and festivals is part of Williams life, he would probably have nothing to do if he didn't and seeing his fiends are just as in to it as he is (as you can tell from the photo) a lot of money must be spent between them. Fashion to William isn't very important, he has hair down to the middle of his back that is probably impossible to get a brush through and when it comes to getting dressed in the morning a band t-shirt and some baggy jeans is all that is needed for him.

Magazine research with photos
This presentation is a quick brief summary of the magazine front covers, contents pages and double page spreads. It has some very simple annotation which will be described in more detail in some of my next posts which will be even more in-depth in to the front cover, contents page and double page spreads individually and will explain more about the magazines I am using and will also start to explain how my magazine will look.

Summery of question 11 and 12 on my questionnaire.
One of my very close freinds David is what sub-cultures call today a "metal head", I know him very well and knew that he reads both magazines I picked to use for my research. Metalhammer and Terrorizer.
David gave me a more indepth answer then everyone else for two of the question in my quistionnaire and I have decided to pull this out and make it seperate as I will probably use David as a template for the 'Perfect reader' for my reader profile.
Question 11
Have you ever brought/read Metalhammer or Terrorizer? If so, what is it you liked about them?
“Metalhammer is the one that I start getting first because I had a decent range of the more well known mainstream bands and the actual journalism in it takes itself less seriously then others but Terrorizer is more underground and will go into areas of metal like satanic black metal stuff that hammer doesn’t really touch and tends to avoid a lot of the more mainstream bands that I cant stand”
Question 12

Question 12
Is there anything you think a music magazine should have that most don't?
“I guess a wider range of reviews across the whole of metal rather than just what they know will sell issues because there are some really good bands that don’t get the recognition they deserve whilst bigger bands can put out crap records and still get loads of coverage because they’ve got a name.”

Evaluation of Questionnaire
In my questionnaire I asked 6 Boys and 6 Girls, ages between 16-22 years of age. All of them enjoy listening to metal along with other genres of music. Most people who brought magazine purchased them monthly and popular magazines I found are (along with Metalhammer, one of the magazines I am researching) NME and Kerrang were also very popular. People tend to only buy a magazine and read the interviews inside if they enjoy the music of the band being featured and some won’t even buy the magazine if they don’t like the band on the front cover. Most people don’t really visit magazine websites as they have the magazines itself but many say that if they enjoyed an interview featured they would be more likely to visit the magazine website and also the website of the band if it was included in the interview. The average price people would pay for a magazine is between £3.00 - £4.00. The two magazines I picked to research were Metalhammer and Terrorizer, which not many people had actually read or brought but a small percentage had, I am still going to stick with these magazines but I am also going to do a bit of research into NME and Kerrang as they were some of the most popular choice for metal and rock music. As for what people look for and like in music magazines and what they would like to see more of, this can be found out on the questionnaire link below.

Q magazine
Check out this SlideShare Presentation -
This slideshow presentation was assigned to us in pairs. We were given a magazine and a list of stuff we had to research from the price to the sales and where they were sold. Me and my partner Simab were given Q magazine. Me and Simab split up our sheets so that we both did certain parts for the powerpoint. I had 3 points to research.
1. Find 3 front covers of your magazine and analyse the conventions of the front cover and if possible a contents page and double spread. What I did was I went onto the Q website were they had a list and photos of every magazine they had ever released so not only did I compare 3 magazines from October-Decemeber 2010 but I also compared the first ever magazine they made which was in 1986 and then the latest one they did in January 2011. I also compared 2 contents pages and I didn't manage to compare 2 different double spreads but I managed to find one that I used just as an example to show what their doublespreads are like.
2. Who is the main audience? I researched and found another blog all on Q magazine that had a lot of information on it about the magazine that also had information for the website, this blog and the website both said that the main audience was 30-40 year old people, mainly men as the magazine is more concentrated on music then fashion or gossip which, they believe, won't appeal to women as much.
3. What is their circulation? I found this also from the blog, the blog and website said that the circulation was 103,017 in December 2008 and 81,240 of those were from the Uk or Republic of Ireland. These are the 3 points I researched.
The points that Simab researched were 'How do they attract and satisfy their audience?','Who owns and distributes the magazine?','How do you think they have used technology to develop their magazine?' and 'Do they have an online version?' all the answers and information for these questions are in the powerpoint below.

Preliminary task!
At the beginning of the Media course (September 2010) we did our Preliminary task. This was our first taste of creating our own school magazine, learning how to use Photoshop and learning about lighting and camera angle to get the photo we wanted.
Front Cover
This was my front cover. It has everything most magazines have... a masthead, a graphic which is a cut out and it's angle of gaze, the date, the price, pull quotes, plugs, teasers, puff-words.
Even with all these things that most magazines have this isn't an amazing piece of work. I was new to photoshop and to trying to take a good photo with good lighting and angle.
You can tell that the photo has been cut out because the edges of it are really flat and cornered and the colour of the background is very plan and bold. The graphic also doesn't take up most of the page and the writing and background colour seem to stand out more then the graphic itself.
All the text is very similar and plan and from first glance you wouldn't realise that it is a school magazine.
Thing that I could do to help improve is use photoshop more, get use to its tools and all the different techniques and also practise taking pictures with different lighting and angles.
I also think if I plan it out better and spend a bit more time on it I will deffinately be able to improve.

Contents page
My contents page is very plain and boring. The colours are very plain and bold. There aren't many photos on the contents page and you would never be able to tell that it is a school magazine. The font is very boring and the layout isn't well though out. I think I can improve my contents page when doing my music magazine but planning it out better, planning out the colours and photo, take more pictures for it and to mess around with different writings and fonts.
Maybe when doing my contents instead of just plain colums of writing saying whats on each page I can highlights specials or important things in the magazine and maybe have another main image like on the frontcover and mix the colours up a bit but not too much, the contents page is pretty much identicle to the frontcover apart from the fact that the images and writing are different so when doing my new one I would like to mkix it up a little, give the frontcover and contents page there own unique twists but to still share the feel of the magazine all the way through from the frontcover to the double spread.
